Lots of alternatives from this grip. It was a great introduction for the "grip-position". Then you can choose what techniques to build your game with.
Sensei Matt D'Anquino teahes how to utilize the shoulder post to stop your opponent from turning and how to set up your attacks immediately out of this post. Whether by using the shoulder post itself or using it to transfrom to your favourite grips. He also points out how to change to differnt grips if your opponent negates the grip of your origin lapel hand to swith to an over the shoulder grip or into the arm drag position or to an underhook. He explaiins all the key details of the given throws very clear and easy to follow. The structure is given in way that the techniqus biuld up to each other or it can be switched in between them based on your opponent' s reaction. Never stop gripfighting until you get your grips! Now how when and how to switch your gripping strategy. This is what helped me to most out of this video series. Highly recommend!!
Having purchased over 100 products from Fanatics (well done Bernardo & Michael, you’ve taken all my money), this is the first time I've actually left a review, this instructional is a must have for gi players, especially if you're a hobbyist like me that doesn't have the time to train both BJJ and Judo, nor has the time to sit down and watch 5 hours straight of instructional with work, family, church obligations etc. Matt's instructional is incredibly well though out, and covers one of the major parts of the stand up game you may find yourself in - when you cannot attain your opponent's power (forward side) sleeve and their forward side collar is presented instead. However, this is not simply a reactive or secondary strategy, Matt presents an aggressive and powerful attacking system that forces your opponent to choose between various bad options. His instruction is technical, to the point and he is a good communicator. His uke is equally professional as well and it seems like both men have trained together a lot, resulting in a flowing dynamic that makes it easy to watch compared to some other instructionals. I have no delusions that watching this will allow me to take on seasoned Judo black belts at their own game, however, watching this has afforded great insight to a major part of the stand up game that was missing, and has given me much greater confidence to stand instead of simply pulling guard if I cannot get my desired power sleeve or rear sleeve grip. I would recommend this from white - black and every weight class, even though Matt is on the lighter side like myself. Disclaimer, Matt received his BJJ black belt from the same coach as me, however we have never trained together, have only met at a few seminars and I’ve tried to be completely honest in my review.
