Very good. Clear layout and instruction by Maia.
Fantastic instruction by Damian Maia with great detail.
This is the most useful video to control the back.
Loved that he first introduced concepts and systematic approach before going into techniques in order demonstrate his “backpack system.” John Danaher does it similar.
Excellent video. Demian Maia shows in great detail how to keep controlling the back. If you watch his fights after this, you will see him do the same moves that he teaches here in his fights.
Best instructional ive ever seen. highly recommend
This dvd is quite informative on the back position. Although DVD 1 is a bit slow if you are an intermediate-advanced level practitioner, it is beneficial for those who are new to the details and concepts of controlling the back. DVD 2 is great on the body triangle. I have never seen the body triangle gone over in so much detail from any other source. Very refreshing to see this covered DVD 3 & 4 are great, some of these things are newer developments of forgotten back retention techniques for not losing the position. Many details of how and why to use certain techniques is gone over quite well. It is rare to see any MMA instructional that would cover this type of topic much less, specialized BJJ for MMA. For those on the fence about getting this DVD because it might be too much MMA and not sport grappling, it is not your typical grappling instructional with strikes thrown in. Although strikes are mentioned, none of the techniques in the dvd are shown with strikes because the topic and specific techniques are grappling techniques. Even those who are interested in pure BJJ/grappling will find this set very valuable with things that may not be taught anywhere else. I fully recommend this volume!
History: When I started BJJ for the first time over a decade ago and looked for a good DVD set, Demian Maia's Science of Jiu-Jitsu was recommended again and again in forums. So I acquired it and like others loved the techniques and the principle-based approach he taught. When I later learned that he was active in the UFC, I got more interested in following his fights. But what could a fighter achieve who only entered such a competitive league at almost 30, an age where many fighters consider quitting already? And without having a special knock-out power? And who kept trying a rather predictable strategy of getting the back and submitting, which his opponents could train to prepare against? The answer is: a lot. Maia would still become the fighter with the second-highest number of UFC victories (only one short of number 1) as well as two title shots (where he lost but only at the distance)! Just a few months ago, Ryan Hall referred to him as the "greatest grappler in the history of mixed martial arts". The actual content: So my expectations were high, and he fulfilled them. Maia explains the principles, the frequent mistakes, what to watch out for, what he would do, how and why techniques work, what opponents can do, and how to counter that. He clearly did his homework and prepared the content well. The information density is high and he'll show the techniques from all relevant angles. His approach is similar to his old DVDs but luckily he teaches almost exclusively new things. He is still the great teacher that he used to be, and I actually liked it better than the Back Attacks DVD of his old set, perhaps it's now more ripened, systematic, and in-depth. If something negative can be said, then that the audio quality is not always optimal, but you'll understand what he says. The focus is especially on maintaining and re-establishing back control while a future series is planned to focus on submission. In summary, I have learned a lot. It's a great instructional for becoming a human backpack.
