Love the fundamental videos by John Danaher. Very informative and detailed.
John Danaher is a Jedi master of conceptual learning, and fine art details. This is my first video series of his I've purchased, & I'm hooked. Its evident his education background is in philosophy. His teaching style & method is clear, concise, with room to insert your own style into the framework he offers. 2 thumbs up & 5 stars
Perfect for me as a beginner! Add Pin Escapes videos to this as first steps in BJJ!
This instructional has been a fantastic aid and has improved my guard retention considerably. While I was eager to get into the specific theory of guard retention content (which is brilliant!), I have found the general theory of guard retention particularly insightful and it is now something I am constantly thinking about when playing guard. Danaher has done an incredible job putting this together. I cannot recommend enough.
What an eye-opener! After almost 7 years of training BJJ as a hobby, this tutorial not only showed me the massive gaps I have in my game (though I was certainly aware of them) but most importantly laid out a detailed root cause of the "Why" and provided excellent solution approach which I successfully managed to apply during both, training sessions and classes I teach in a local gym. John steps away from the orthodox approach of going through single techniques and piecing them together but lays out a true system of guard vs. guard pass, the nature of the "The guard" and requirements for passing and retention. The way he explains is pragmatical and completely focused on "what works and why it works" from an anatomical perspective. An example is the "4 points of connection" and "6 steps to passing a guard/getting your guard passed". One will learn about the importance/retention of grips, placement of the feet and potential impact if those "4 points of connection" change/are being changed. This conceptual approach helps me to both, better understand the sport and improve my game fundamentally. Bottom line: a clear "must" for anyone who is looking for the conceptual approach on guard, guard passing and retention.
Excellent, as expected
Step by step. I could understand system of retention. He’s amazing!
John shows exactly what everyone would expect from a true Master: wisdom, confidence and, above all, patience to repeat his teachings till everything is as clear as it can be. Really easy to understand english (I’m not a native english speaker), great filming and virtually no editing required, so fluent and well thought are his explanations. A must see video, indeed!
Great technique
Danaher has nack for fine details. "Put your hand here,.." "Put your foot here,..." "Don't do this, because this will happen..." Literally walks you through each move with different views and explains everything in detail. This is a good addition to your library.
I am very fond of John Danaher’s teaching style. He is very detailed oriented, but also simplifies the concepts for anyone to understand. I definitely recommend this series for anyone.
Just an excellent brake down of the system. A true genius in the BJJ game, no matter what people say, his an awesome teacher ... Totally worth the investment.
At 48, I'm quite a bit older than most of the people at my gym but I have the benefit of being on the bigger/stronger side. My size has allowed me to keep up with the younger/faster crowd for the most part, but one area where they've completely left me behind is in guard retention. With this in mind, I finally ponied up the $ for my first Danaher instructional... and wow, it is SO MUCH MORE than I'd hoped for. I've read some complaints on the internet about how JD repeats things on his instructionals but I find it extremely helpful in that he repeats the things that are the most fundamental and important to know, thus allowing them to sink in more quickly than some of the finer details/specific applications. The net result is that instead of feeling overwhelmed by a ton of things you need to memorize right away, instead you can watch the whole thing once and immediately have a few key things to focus on in class... And then revisit it later (repeatedly) to start filling in the gaps. This instructional was so helpful to me that I've already bought Pin Escapes, Closed Guard and Half Guard as well (even though I'm less sucky at those). I now spend most of my time on the mat consciously trying to improve my game one small piece at a time instead of just trying to get the better of my opponent.
The way Mr Danaher breaks down the details in both the concepts and the specific scenarios makes it so much easier to understand and improve guard retention. This course gave me quite a few new tools to begin utilizing and helped me better understand concepts I thought I knew. Awesome videos!
Absolutely loved this program. The way John teaches is perfect. You can see why he has so many high level competitors. He builds a framework for you so that you understand conceptually what is going on at every stage of an encounter, and then fills it in with details. It's the exact opposite of how most of us are taught - with techniques first and then concepts or broad strokes later. I'm super happy I got this program and it has already made a massive difference in my game. Highly recommend!
Great breakdown of every possible scenario of guard retention. Excellent stuff!
This series makes a systematic approach. John gives an overview of all the available techniques and focuses on most effective ones. Besides guard retention techniques I actually learn a lot about guard passes!!! I wish I had this series on my first year of training
I appreciate the level of analysis that Danaher provides. So, I rated it 5 stars for what it provided me. Danaher spends about half of the video explaining fundamental concepts in great depth. For many people, understanding these concepts will help them learn the moves and adapt to them to novel situations. The strength of this video, and I assume this series, may be irrelevant to some players. I have noticed that some people don't absorb much of what they see and hear, and really don't "understand" these concepts until they do them. So, some BJJ players might want more of an "encyclopedia" of moves, than this level of analysis--something that will walk them through a lot of moves with less verbiage. Danaher obviously has a great BJJ mind and put great care into this product. The moves that are taught in this series and will benefit everyone, but you are also paying for the analysis, which you may or may not benefit from.
My open guard has completely changed. It’s a lot to take in and if you have a journal you def want to take notes on all volumes of this system. I already have the Closed Guard and Leg Lock System in the cart getting ready for Houston Open 2020 I see gold in my future!
I am tired of scrolling through you tube free videos to find a comprehensive course on closed guard Just pay the money it’s about the same as a seminar Incredible , information that I can review over and over
Fundamentals are essential, and between this DVD and the PIN ESCAPES DVD, John Danaher has improved my understanding and conceptual toolbelt of BJJ exponentially. As an older, basic b*tch white belt, I am truly grateful. This is a well thought out and presented instructional.
Great concept breakdown for the novice. Lots of stuff to come back to over and over again on the journey.
Can’t go wrong with this amazing series!!!
This is an awesome DVD series about guard retention. I love how it is broken down into general principles and specific guard pass principles. He does an awesome job on sharing the details of guard retention.
I have excellent instructors but still find Danaher's content invaluable. The way he breaks things down really works for me.
