I bought and watched this series as a white belt, about 6 months after starting. Before watching, I had little to no open guard game. A few weeks of watching and drilling, and I was working pretty effectively from collar-sleeve, De La Riva, ashi garami, X guard, and butterfly. For each guard type, Danaher presents basic mechanics, a handful of entries, and at least 4 or 5 sweeps. He also goes deeper into submission attacks from collar-sleeve. The topic of open guard is vast, and Danaher does an excellent job of delimiting the scope of this intro to a core set of guards and techniques that can get a beginner going right away.

So many details, so much information. Open guard is damn hard to systematize. But John gives 4 principles that will make it easier. It is a daunting undertaking. And I still have to take it all in and beyond that have to transfer it to the mats. But I will! And maybe you as well!

This dvd lays out a great and simple system for open guard play. The movements and simple and so easy to remember you can start applying them to sparring after only a few watches. Great stuff!

Great stuff. I have been for many years and found many concepts I did not know about that were immediately applicable to my game as well as having lots of new moves shown in great detail to try out. He takes the time to make sure to explain every grip and having sections for the responses your opponents are sure to give was very helpful

John Danaher's Open Guard Instructional opened my eyes to all the options from the various guards. All in all it's a very condensed and comprehensive overview over the topic. Additionally, Danaher is a great teacher and coach. He has the ability to not only explain the concepts and principlies, but also to undermine these with concrete examples.
