Great insights that you hope your teammates don't learn to use against you!
Henry Akins is such a practical and to the point instructor. Also he is Rickson guy so you know this is going to be effective. Invest in not getting pinned anymore.
Great options for dealing with the pressure of side control, where the emphasis is on preventing yourself from being flattened out and the mechanics of how to do that, and the importance of gaining the underhook vs the framing method. I have been able to attend some of Henry's seminars in the past, and there is so much info, it's so hard to remember all of it....having this instructional has helped me refresh my brain haha...This instructional also ties in nicely with one of his instructors- John Frankl's iron pillow system. If you love defensive strategies can't go wrong here, this will help for sure
I really loved this instructional. 1. Because Henry is the real deal and is always focussed on concepts, not 1,000 techniques. 2. Because his advice fits in very well with this trend of focussing on what older dudes can use. Conceptually this fits in very well with Pritt Mihkelson's Defensive BJJ, Eduardo Telles's Turtle Guard, and as Henry mentions, Craig Jones's Octopus Guard. The idea of remaining safe and not getting crushed, rather than fighting to retain guard has brought a very methodological approach to staying safe on the mats for older grapplers. Highly recommend this instructional.
Been putting myself in this position and purposely escaping with it. Ill always have it in my back pocket now going forward
Great instructional for dealing with side control. Having the ability to deny someone this position is crucial. Henry breaks it down and makes the mechanics and concepts easy to follow and learn.
Henry might be my favorite instructor. He is easy to listen to because he speaks effectively. A lot of times his demonstration and explaining are quite concise, which I appreciate. This instructional is just so interesting, because it's such a central part of BJJ (involves guard passing attempts and is the reaction to such attempts). I just finished watching this and have been thinking about watching it again. It's definitely material worth learning well, so you may want to watch it again to learn it extra well. I highly recommend this. It goes with the saying: an ounce of prevention is worse a pound of cure. The prevention is mainly preventing being flattened out, which is needed to get the pin.
If you study BJJ as a hobby, can only put in 3-4 days per month, and need to learn as efficiently as possible...then this course is gold. Henry Akins makes a bold claim. He says you can skip years in developing an impassable guard. He says to just let them pass, get to your side, and learn basic skills to prevent yourself from being pinned. Then get to your knees and take them down from the bottom turtle position. If you're older, a hobbyist, not athletic, and just don't have the years to dedicate to guard work, this course is eye opening. It's the cheat code. I can't recommend it enough.
Outstanding. Clear and immediately applicable. Literally changed my game the first time I tried these techniques. It will only get better as I practice.
As an older, but relatively fit grappler, I find this micro position, and incredibly practial. This vid was worth its weight in gold. A+++++
I spent a week in Costa Rica at a Hero BJJ camp with Henry and we mostly worked on this content. Picked up the instructional so I can revisit it. It's simple, unorthodox, and it works.
There is so much content about what to do once you're in side control, but this fully addresses what to do in that critical transition before they flatten you out. It seems counterintuitive to not frame but once you try it (or roll against someoene who does it correctly) you'll become a believer. Nice work Henry!
The ideas use fantastic biomechanics which change depending upon what your opponent does. Take a look. I am a fan. The concepts are highly useable.
This is fantastic stuff. Simple and revolutionary. It changes how you think about escaping.
Took it to the mat and had immediate success. Feel so much more confident escaping side control.
Good
Great way to explain not only movements but philosophies
