Enjoyed the more theory based approach for “turtle”. Also appreciated the degree of details presented that were explored for a “seemingly” overlooked guard.
Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::+1::skin-tone-2:A personal closed guard seminar
The Closed Guard Compendium by Matt Thornton
The aim of this instructional is to teach the most important elements of close guard - bottom. It is presented as a training course of 45 lessons of varying length and is targeted primarily at white and blue belts. The instructional is 3 hours and 38 minutes long. Some of the lessons are taught in Gi and some in No-Gi. Unfortunately, each lesson is described by a lesson number only. I think a short lesson description would be useful, particularly when you want to find and revise a technique or concept. The instructional covers maintaining good posture and base in the closed guard; the importance of connecting your body to your opponent’s body (e.g. closed guard - hip connection); applying your weight from the bottom; posture – connection – pressure; the concept of breaking the line – opponent’s point of balance; positioning your hips, heels (plus pinching) or body (i.e. angles) to make it difficult for the opponent to bring a leg up; moving the opponent within the guard using your legs to break posture; clearing grips to remove frames, sitting up after clearing frames to take advantage of the opportunity for a hip bump sweep; the hug & roll sweep; being able to control your opponent so they can’t stand up; cutting & maintaining an angle; hand fighting; taking the back while being stacked; the elevator hook sweep; defending the can opener; arm triangle from a stack; stripping grips in the GI; back take in the GI; some examples of wristlocks from the bottom; cross lapel chokes; arm bars – a methodical approach & a faster entry/more aggressive approach; breaking posture using your arms – climbing the Gi & combined with pulling with your legs; pulling technique using your arms; defending opening the guard, when the opponent is attempting to open your knees; a simple sweep from repositioning your hips & twisting your body; a strong sweep when the opponent is in combat base within your closed guard & a variant combining an armbar; using flower sweeps when the opponent is trying to pass your guard, with an option to take an armbar; and a triangle from same side collar. In addition, there is a lesson on how to properly position your body in middle mount. Importantly throughout the instructional there are useful observations to improve your techniques e.g. controlling your opponent who is in a supine position while applying an armbar. The instructional is presented by Matt Thornton in a seminar format and he uses two black belt uke to assist with performing the techniques and drills. He speaks clearly, is engaging and his directions are easily understood. Importantly he coaches as he discusses the techniques and concepts. The techniques are repeated and there is some live training of the material by the two uke to help consolidate your learning. Sound and picture quality are good, however there are some minor sound imperfections in the first couple of lessons. The angles of the technique displayed are appropriate. I like the style of this instructional and for me it feels similar to attending a private lesson. Naturally, you are expected to follow and drill the lessons. I think that if you wish to improve your understanding of the closed guard from the bottom and make your closed guard technique stronger then this instructional will definitely help.

Fundamental Armbar Mechanics by Karel "Silver Fox" Pravec
Great DVD with great details, and I can truly say it's a one of a kind instructional with some conventional and unconventional approaches to getting and finishing the armbar. Silver fox style is great for both gi or no gi and mma. Anyone who is a BJJ FANATIC it would behoove you to buy this, study this and add it to your game.

Framing Domination and Guard Recovery by Tom DeBlass
Upon watching it the first the time, I did not quite concentrate on what Tom was trying to emphasis when explaining the framing foundations. Until I decided to completely disconnect and transfer my focus on volume one. Completing volume one led me to become engrossed, devouring all the volumes. The details Tom outlined were key gems, I never got from my instructors past and present when on the bottom. I can say I immersed myself 100% in this DVD, unlike previous instructional videos. I still note the concepts down from this DVD and apply them in practice. Cheers

The Armlock Obsession by Dave Camarillo
The Armlock Obsession is my favorite BJJ fanatics video so far!!! It is at the top with Danahers. I love the way Dave Camarillo methodically breaks down the arm lock and all its defenses. Plus he is the first instructor that added positional threading to the video. Really impressive!!! I cannot wait for the next video in the series!

High Percentage Chokes: No Gi by Lachlan Giles
Nice instruction of chokes, troubleshooting, linking stuff together, and transitioning between positions. I like it when instructionals show how techniques flow into each other (instead of just showing isolated techniques), and Lachlan is good at that.
Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::sunglasses:Great information on this DVD
The Armlock Obsession by Dave Camarillo
I have never been one to arm hunt. My game were chokes and playing with the foot, but after watching Dave's DVD, it changed how I approach my game. I am able to maintain mount a lot better and now all I want are arms! He breaks down the instructions so easy to understand. It changed my outlook how to attack!
Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::+1::skin-tone-2:Great for older practitioners
The Sitting Turtle by Priit Mihkelson
I'm an older (59) practitioner, 3-stripe purple. I have really found the sitting turtle (Mihkelson's companion positions) to be a real game changer for me. Because most of my training partners are bigger, faster and younger than me, my strategy used to be to try to sweep, get on top, and then hold them there or look for a submission. But this took a lot of energy and once I was passed or swept myself, I had to use lots more energy to escape or simply survive. With these very counter-intuitive positions, however, I can really save a lot of energy, confuse my partners, tire them out, and then counter attack. Even with higher level training partners, the system works because they are not used to partners so willingly giving the back. And, because I have big hands, that old man strength, and am an experienced wrist-locker (Aikido practitioner), I can frustrate my partners and even submit them with surprise attacks. You definitely want to have all of the DVDs so that you have the complete system. s

Champions Mindset by Bernardo Faria
I know most of the time we are looking for videos that deal with techniques and positions but I feel this one is just as valuable as it deals with the overall mindset. It’s great to learn new techniques but even more important to keep training.
Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::+1::skin-tone-2:You Can't Go Wrong with the Silver Fox
Fundamental Armbar Mechanics by Karel "Silver Fox" Pravec
Professor Pravec is hands-down one of my favorite BJJ gurus. He has an uncanny ability to break down broader concepts AND specific technique and execution details like no one else. I've enjoyed his YouTube videos, his instructional with Firas Zahabi, and his "Roll With the Fox" series since beginning my BJJ journey, and was super psyched to finally see this collaboration with BJJ FANATICS. Fox's invaluable lessons are not to be missed if you're looking for a studious deep dive into arm bars with tons of takeaways. And shout out to his black belt Enrique who serves a FOx's rolling partner in these vids.
Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::+1::skin-tone-2:Split and other guards leading to armlocks
Fundamental Armbar Mechanics by Karel "Silver Fox" Pravec
This is and armlock instructional but it has a superb added value which is the guards shown in chapter 1.If you learn only the first chapter: perpendicular guard, the split guard and ude gatame as a system; there not much more you will need to have a killer submission guard. Ask my friend Tyrrel (Destro) that averages 5 submissions per roll using these techniques... . Silver Fox provides all important details and he is easy to watch because his teaching skills are at another level. Oss!

Paul is an amazing instructor, with a comprehensive knowledge of Jiu Jitsu for real world self defense. He is one of those rare instructors who has made his martial art work across multiple dimensions from sport, to cage, to street. I'm very fortunate to have trained with him. Do yourself a favor and don't pass on the opportunity to train with him.

Leg Lock Anthology: 50/50 by Lachlan Giles
I’m pretty much staggered by how good this instructional is, the level of detail discussed and shown, and the way the whole subject is approached and broken down, it’s superb, and big thanks to LG for putting it together and passing on his knowledge.

Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::+1::skin-tone-2:The best $47 you can spend here?
Power Kicking by Benson Henderson
I've been waiting awhile for this one as soon as I got wind and wasn't let down. Bendo is an accomplished MMA striker and former UFC champion coaching at one of the more innovative gyms in the country (The Lab). While he's not trying to use words that he doesn't know, and more impressively not taking credit for 'calf kicks' (he gives proper), he knows how to do what he's teaching you to do. It's over an hour of technique and explanation, neither come up short. Excellent, and worth the wait.
