.....for recommending or speaking so highly of Jake Mainini and his Muay Thai musings (Calvin Kattar). There is so much Massachusetts in this DVD I feel like I'm "dancin' in the streets of Hyannis". If you want to get "pretty good at the game" study it all. I will help you, highly recommend this for beginner to intermediate strikers.

Crash Course: Striking For MMA by Kyle Bochniak
....in the way Kyle explains, right from the jump my main man is teaching good footwork for MMA. It's no secret Kyle and I are from the same place, but I wasn't aware he had done so much teaching until I watched this, in which case it became quite obvious. The striking DVD's are seemingly in need of a striking coach or two to help potential buyers as the price vs. information is often a coin flip. I'm not sure anyone can read my black belt opinion as a striker who's competed in 4 different arenas, whomever M is doesn't like free advice, but here's some; All of the striking DVD's involving fighters / coaches from Mass. where this company is based, are fantastic. Mainini (correct spelling?), Bochniak, and Whittier all put out really good material. Pick any 2 of those three and I assure you'll learn more than the one that is $150, which isn't "Advanced" while the other 3 at least touch on some more advanced things, then again Saenchai's does for $47. Perhaps when The Lab - Benson Henderson comes out in a few months (aka "soon", the answer normally given), Wonderboy in 2022 or some of the other "soon's" like Galvao's No Gi Side Mount will have or explore more than just Muay Thai at more than a beginner's level. This one actually keeps MMA in mind, great job Kyle!!!! You all know who this is ;) (I have 10 more to write, you can't read most of them anyway)

The Scarf Hold The Soul Stealer by Henry Akins
This is a fantastic instructional, and not much instructional material is available on this subject. Just the position itself generates so much pressure on the diaphragm to the point it is a submission... One of the things I enjoy about this instructional is Prof Akins elaborates on how to methodically negate the defenses (eg body locking and bridging, framing, trying to put hooks in to take the back, etc) to this under-utilized pin. Henry Akins is one of the best teachers in my opinion in a field where there are so many great ones to learn from.

Lachlan is one of the best instructors hands down. He explains techniques in a clear and concise manner without the long drawn out explanations like some of the other big time BJJ coaches. I’ve become known in my gym for head and arm chokes after studying this instructional. Highly recommend this and any of his other DVD’s.

It's great to have a submission master like Mr Fujiwara showing us some of his favourite techniques and giving out some nice tips. The chapter headings need to be sorted out because they don't always correspond to what's being demonstrated. But it doesn't take away from the instruction. At 71 Mr Fujiwara is still as funny and brutal as ever.

This is probably the best instructional I've watched. Huge fan of Dave for a long time, but this is his best work yet. Walks you through an entire system from all different aspects and truly gives you an incredible system to pin and submit your opponents. Can't recommend enough.

Excellent instructional video; Garry is clear and concise. I tend to have a very defensive mindset so I really related to this topic. There were two things that Garry did in the instructional that I thought were superb. First, was the overview of the attacks where he showed the concepts of the attack and related the attack to the escape. These were good to see from both an offensive and defensive perspectives. I would like to see more instructional videos where concepts are discussed, as opposed to, just showing techniques. The second thing that I really enjoyed was the transitions to attacks from the escapes.

It's a comprehensive look at how striking and wrestling interplay to break down an opponent's structure so that you can tip the scales in your favor. Plenty of wrestling and striking. Lots of stuff you could use in MMA...and even more stuff that's so dirty you wouldn't dare. A great place to start your martial arts journey or to transition from competition moves to street stuff if you're a tournament player looking to be able to defend yourself in the real world. Phenomenal download. Worth every penny.

This can be watched independably, but I recommend to watch the other videos first in order to really understand what this does. No Gi Takedown Fundamentals by Andre Galvao
I missed this, until now. I've learned from so many brilliant coaches in person and / or via study, with Prof. Galvao he seems tremendous. This is another home run on Takedowns for the Mixed Martial Artist, grappler etc.. As a Jiu Jitsu first thinker (myself), sometimes the wrestler first thinker's takedown system, especially the end game, isn't the same. It matters, though I'd preach to anyone at any level to study everything, if someone knows hat they're talking about of course. Excellent added blend I didn't expect of Jiu Jutsu without a Gi teaching self-defense, as it should be, and then going non-sequitur into a well-explained yet advanced for most black belts takedown to break down sequence.. I don't know how I missed this, another home run for Prof. Galvao. Oss

The specific details are awesome . If you struggle with escaping make sure you get this. I’m a blue belt and elbow escape was pretty useless against brown and black belts . Now I know the small but crucial mistakes that caused me to waste a lot of energy, stay stuck on bottom and eventually tap out .

Escapes: Old School Evolution by Fabio Gurgel
This instructional teaches positional escapes from side control, kesa gateme, north-south, mount, turtle, back, knee on belly and half guard bottom. These escapes are marketed as old school BJJ escapes (i.e. proven, efficient and effective). Fabio Gurgel is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu 6th degree black belt and he has written two BJJ books and created a range of instructionals. This is the second Fabio Gurgel instructional that I have purchased. I have also bought and reviewed the Side Control Attacks and Submissions instructional. This instructional consists of four volumes and comprises 48 escape techniques. The first point to note is this is an instructional that cuts to the chase, as there is not a lot of coverage about concepts or theories or teaching you how to move (e.g. bridge and hip escape), but rather the focus is on the actual escape techniques. The approach is about understanding how you are pinned and then selecting the most appropriate escape. I have bought a couple of instructionals on positional escapes and in this instructional there are multiple practical escape techniques that I have not seen before. Fabio is a great teacher. Consistent with the side control submissions instructional Fabio presents well and he is easy to understand. He demonstrates a technique several times including from different angles and then he performs the technique at “real/full speed”. He highlights the important details that make an escape technique work. To make the movements easier to see and understand Fabio is wearing a blue Gi and his uke a white Gi. Sound and picture quality are good. The angles of the technique displayed are appropriate. I like the techniques that Fabio has chosen to include in this instructional, as they are practical, logical and effective. If you need to grow your ability to escape positional pins then this represents a good buy. The instructional is 2 hours and 55 minutes long.
