ZERO TO DOJO HERO!
Guard Retention: BJJ Fundamentals - Go Further Faster by John Danaher
I'm 45 years old. I started BJJ in 2019 for roughly four months, three nights a week with a group of blue belts during a deployment to Afghanistan. I stopped rolling completely until I started up again in 2023 for three nights a week. After getting crushed for a month, I knew I needed help! Enter John Danaher's (JD's) Guard Retention. I powered through the course in about two weeks but within the first week my guard retention became impassable by white belts and by the next week blue belts couldn't crack JD's code! I've been able to keep a purple belt form passing. It has been a little over a month now since I completed this series and now I either get crushed while in guard by bigger and/or better opponents or I let people pass to half guard to keep it interesting for the less experienced training partners. It's nice to have the option!!! This has taken my game and confidence to another level. I constantly get complimented on my guard retention and so I tell them about JD's amazing coaching! I am currently into JD's Pins and Escapes, another game changer and level up!
Response from BJJ FanaticsNice, great work!:skin-tone-3:If you can get just one instructional about maintaining and controlling the back with progress to finsh - this definitely is it!
Maintaining Back Control by Andrew Wiltse
A. W put the content on point to execute maintaining, controlling and finishing from the back. He first points out the three spots of back control. Second how to get him to the underhookside if he pressures towards the head or pulls him self downwards or to the opposite of the underhook side. Then he points out how to control the turtle position and bring him back to the underhook back control. RNC series is about how to get to the best possible RNC finish and when and how to transition to other submissions. The recovery covers then your are chest to back while you are half kneeling behind your opponent and the tasks and importance of the two hooks and how to regain them and when and how to use the gift wrap/armbarposition when you lean over on top turtle to get back to to the back. Followed by when and how to use the arm triangle to chase the back and when to chase aand when to pul him into you to get back to the back. His understanding is super deep and his explanations are missing not a single detail. And of course it is always fun to listen to him! Highly recommend!!

Half Guard Passing and Dynamic Pins: BJJ Fundamentals - Go Further Faster by John Danaher
I found a helluva lot of value from this instructional series. I find that I can now consistently force half guard top and know what moves I need to do to pass from there. It has helped me as a jiujitsu practitioner as it also informs how I ought to play half guard bottom.

The Modern Defensive Guard by Ryan Hall
I used to play half guard a lot, and "let" people to push me over and try to pass my guard. I learned a lot, but it really warped my thinking of what the guard really is. This collection changed my view of the guard, and now not only am I more aggressive, but I also started to get more submission too.
Very Entertaining

Collar and Sleeve Flow System!
Collar & Sleeve Guard a Systematic Approach by Isaac Doederlein
I. D. created an action reaction based collar and sleeve system. No matter iif the bottom or top player initiate the action. First he is going deeply into the key facts of collar and sleeve. Then it comes to the retention with a very clear step by step approach to against the different guard gripping and passing attempts and to use them to set up your attacks. He points out really clear how valuable the half lasso is in terms of retention and setting up attacks. His attacking system is based around the omoplata attack. He combines it with tranisitions and set ups of sweeps and triangle attacks as well as armbars. He guids you step by step through each technique with very clear explanations and gives you a bunch of angles and repetitions in moderate to full speed. Highly recommend!!
Great stuff!
Killer Leglocks From Side Control by Erik Paulson
This instructional is amazing. Not only does Erik Paulson show a lot of submission chains based off of how your opponent will react, he also tells the history of where certain techniques came from. I love both aspects. Learn some of these techniques and you will be tapping people out with moves they don't even see coming!

The Unstoppable Kimura Trap
The Daisy Fresh Kimura Trap by Andrew Wiltse
Wiltse’s Kimura trap system is quite different from all the others I’ve seen but it’s far simpler to understand. As with all his videos this one is filled with rapid fire details and techniques that work on real high level opponents and there’s no wasted time or useless repetition. He’s the best instructor around.

Unifying The Systems: Navigating Between The DDS Submissions Systems by Garry Tonon

Crucial Details
Rody Lock: The Nick Rodriguez Body Lock System by Nick Rodriguez
I really liked Nicky Rod's body lock series. I also have Gordon Ryan's. Ok, I spend too much on tapes! Nicky Rod really brought out some key details that I've not seen elsewhere. One thing was his careful distinction between 2 on 1 leg control vs. half guard. I also liked Nicky Rod's detail on the sprawl from body lock to get rid of a butterfly hook. I've been using body lock for several months now and have been struggling with people getting underhooks. Nicky Rod gives a solution to this and to what to do about frames on the face/head. Gordon Ryan's body lock tape is also very good. There is much more detail in terms of alternatives in Gordon's treatment. Gordon also shows himself rolling and explains what he's doing which is helpful. If I were just starting out in body locking, I would start with Nicky Rod's product. One final point, Gordon's training partner is much better looking than Nicky Rod's!

Unparalleled look at the guard
Open Guard Compendium: Lower Body Guards by Ariel Tabak
Lachlan Giles went to Ariel to improve his guard work. After viewing this instructional you can see why. The level of detail is unparalleled. He has the ability to give you the big picture philosophy you expect from a Danaher video and the detailed competition technique you expect from a Gordon video combined with the perspective of a lightweight athlete that you get from a Lachlan Giles. I recommend getting all his instructionals for a full picture of the modern guard game

World Class Instruction
The Daisy Fresh Knee Slice by Andrew Wiltse
The Wiltse Bros set a new bar in the instructional market. Unlike other popular instructors each video is jam packed with technique and details with little to no repetition. Wiltse understands that you can scrub the video and go back if you want to see something again.

Best Introductory Course
Fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Escapes Gi & No Gi by Lachlan Giles
In my opinion this is hands down a must have Instructional for your first years in BJJ. As a white belt you are going to be playing off worse positions almost all the time, and Lachlan does a phenomenal job guiding you through escaping all of them. I noticed my game has improved tremendously and I have not even gone through all of the material yet. Also, it is structured in an encyclopedia-like fashion, and you can refer to each position and each counter if you are having trouble with a particular issue. There is enough stuff here even for more advanced practitioners, so you can't really go wrong with it. 10/10 recommend.
Fantastic
