The Half Guard Anthology by Lachlan Giles
This was the first instructional I ever bought originally as a purple belt. The degree of organized complexity is amazing, with a structure that allows you to get both general concepts and insane levels of depth. Looking back now, still one of the best instructionals ever, though does not have coverage for some of the more modern approaches (e.g. half-butterfly). Since this instructional, I've purchased almost every one of Lachlan's subsequent instructionals.

The Catch Wrestling Formula by Neil Melanson
I asked my instructor at one point which person I should watch to emulate and learn from. He recommended Neil and I proceeded to obsessively follow him. He’s a fantastic grappler/teacher and his great strength is systematizing and combining different grappling styles together. Neil provides a lot of material in this instructional. I am particularly fond of the first “disk” where he goes over the whizzer. In my opinion, his teaching on the whizzer is worth the price of the instructional. That particular move has saved me several times. There’s a couple series here that he explores more in depth later on like the cradle of filth. Still, I think this instructional has a lot of gems that are worth studying. You can’t really go wrong with Coach Neil. Stay filthy.

Theodore does a great job of mixing everything from MMA to various Jiu-Jitsu styles ( not just BJJ), aikido and dirty street fighting, just to name a few. Gives good explanation of how to put your attacker in positions he doesn’t want to be in as well as how to finish him once you are there. One of my favorite videos in my whole BJJ FANATICS library!

C.N. shows a lot of aspects and variations of the Bull Sweep and Bicycle Sweep with establishing position on both feet or side control or mount. An extra benefit is that he also shows what could happen if you get lazy with one of the keypoints if the techniques.

Fundamentals of a Jiu Jitsu Renegade by Kurt Osiander
This is the only instructional you really need, I was familiar with Kurt Osiander from his Move of the week series and the documentaries on YouTube, so when I actually found a school and started training I picked up this dvd to try aid my progress. I’d apply the techniques I’d seen in this dvd that covers the importance of closed guard, sweeps, escapes and submissions, after a while my coach told me while rolling “you KNOW JiuJitsu”. This dvd comes on sale a bit it’s well worth the money, it’s fun and informative I really enjoy Kurt’s style, he likes a joke and trains hard. If you’ve seen his Instagram account or seen him on podcasts in the last few years he’s been going through some stuff and could use some support, this isn’t to drum up charity, this is well worth it for your own progress. My favourite from this dvd is the simple sweep with a cross collar grip because it sets up a triple attack(cross collar choke/arm bar/super cross collar choke) from mount after using the closed guard effectively. Also shout out to the assassin beetle roll. For reference I’m 6”0, 120kgs. This suits my style of using weight and pressure passing, controlling my opponent and “cooking” them using good positioning and then working for submissions. Thanks for putting this out Kurt, it was a fantastic reference when I was starting through to now, it’s also the stuff I show people starting out. “Go train!”

Advanced Guard Systems by Neil Melanson
So far I've loved everything that I have purchased of Neil's. Shoulder Pin, Half Guard, Full Guard, Adv. Guard, etc... his material is refreshing. He's got a good sense of humor. You can tell he cares about the sport. Seems like a good dude. The course is real interesting the way he does things. It's real unique and you can see how it would be useful. I've been practicing religiously on the grappling ***** in preparation for getting some work done on the mats. Great stuff.
