The Fishnet: Sweeping and Back Taking System by Shane Fishman
The Fishnet: Sweeping and Back Taking System by Shane Fishman presents a difficult and complex position—combining a lockdown with X-guard—in a simple and accessible way. The instructional breaks the system down clearly, making the details easier to understand and apply. Overall, it is a very useful resource for anyone interested in learning this unique position and its sweeps and back takes.

The Fastest Way: To Develop An Unpassable Guard
The Fastest Way: To Develop An Unpassable Guard by John Danaher
Making My Guard Harder to Pass One Sore Hip at a Time One of Danaher’s more practical instructionals, with a great systematic approach to understanding how your guard gets passed and how to stop it before things go downhill. There’s plenty here that takes drilling to become automatic, but for an older grappler like me, learning better positioning and retention beats trying to out-scramble someone half my age every time.
Bernardo Faria’s Jiu Jitsu For Old Guys: Fundamental Game Plan
Jiu Jitsu For Old Guys: Fundamental Game Plan by Bernardo Faria
Finally, an Instructional That Understands I’m Not 25 Anymore What makes this instructional so useful is that Bernardo gives you an actual game plan from standing, to half guard, to pressure passing, and all the way through dominant positions and submissions without relying on speed or crazy flexibility. For an older grappler like me, this is exactly the kind of jiu-jitsu I want—simple, heavy, efficient, and designed around making the younger guy do most of the unnecessary moving.
Gordon Ryan The Pillars of Defense: Turtle & Front Headlock Escapes
The Pillars of Defense: Turtle & Front Headlock Escapes by Gordon Ryan
A Game Plan for When Everything Goes Wrong What makes this instructional so useful is that Gordon gives you multiple ways to safely turn turtle and front headlock positions back into guard, a standing position, or even an offensive opportunity instead of just trying to survive. There’s a lot of detail to absorb, but having an actual escape system is much better than my old strategy of getting stuck underneath someone half my age and waiting for them to get tired—which apparently takes a lot longer than it used to.
Lucas Leite’s The Coyote Half Guard
The Coyote Half Guard by Lucas Leite
Old School, Simple, and Still Extremely Effective The Coyote Half Guard is a great system because it gives you a clear plan from bottom half guard—get the underhook, control the leg, create the angle, and work toward the dogfight, sweep, or back take instead of just surviving underneath someone. The instructional is a little older and not as polished as some of the newer eight-hour systems, but the techniques have stood the test of time, and for an older grappler like me, using leverage and positioning to move someone beats trying to bench-press them off me every day.
Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Half Guard and Scrimmaging: Whizzer vs Underhook
Systematically Attacking The Half Guard and Scrimmaging: Whizzer vs Underhook by Gordon Ryan
Finally Making Sense of the Half Guard Scramble Excellent instructional that takes the confusing underhook-versus-whizzer battle and turns it into a system with clear options depending on how your opponent reacts. There’s a lot of material here and it will definitely take some mat time to absorb, but I’d much rather understand where I’m going than get into another scramble with a 25-year-old and hope for the best.
Gordon Ryan’s Ultimae Back Attacks and Escapes Bundle
Ultimate Back Attacks and Escapes Bundle by Gordon Ryan
Learn Both Sides of the Worst Place to Be Excellent bundle that gives you a detailed system for both attacking the back and getting yourself out when you're the one stuck there, with some great details on control, hand fighting, strangles, and escapes. There is a LOT of material to work through, but at my age I’d rather spend the time learning the details than have a 25-year-old hanging on my back while I wonder where everything went wrong.

Shawn Melanson’s Precision Attacks and Sweeps From Butterfly Half and Knee Shield
Precision Attacks and Sweeps From Butterfly Half and Knee Shield by Shawn Melanson
A Lot of Good Stuff Without a Four-Hour Lecture Really good instructional with practical attacks and sweeps from butterfly half and knee shield, and I especially liked how Shawn connects sweeps, submissions, and reactions instead of just showing isolated moves. It’s straight to the point and gives me plenty to work on without requiring me to sit through eight hours of video first—which at my age leaves more time for actually training and recovering.

Strangles & Turtle Breakdowns: BJJ Fundamentals - Go Further Faster
Strangles & Turtle Breakdowns: BJJ Fundamentals - Go Further Faster by John Danaher
A Lot More to Turtle Than I Thought Excellent breakdown of gi strangles and attacking the turtle, with the small details on grips, positioning, and control that Danaher is known for. It’s definitely information-heavy and takes some time to digest, but at my age I’ll gladly spend extra time learning how to make someone else work harder while I just tighten the collar.
The Expanded Coyote Half Guard System Gi
The Expanded Coyote Half Guard System Gi by Lucas Leite
Old-School Half Guard That Still Works Lucas Leite’s The Expanded Coyote Half Guard System Gi is a great addition to the original Coyote Half Guard system and adds more options, reactions, and details to an already proven game. It may take some drilling to really get the timing down, but for an older grappler like me, I’ll happily take leverage, underhooks, and technique over trying to move like I’m 25 again.
