Passing the Guard: BJJ Fundamentals - Go Further Faster by John Danaher
Dahlia
Completely game-changing mechanics (and RIP Placido's foot)
Master The Move: The Ankle Lock by John Danaher
First off, someone needs to check on Placido. I genuinely feel sorry for the guy after watching him have his foot relentlessly cranked on for several hours straight—but his sacrifice was absolutely worth it for this instructional. John Danaher's Master the Move: The Ankle Lock is nothing short of game-changing. If you think you know how to finish an ankle lock based on the traditional, old-school methods, prepare to unlearn all of that. His approach here is fundamentally different from every traditional ankle lock video I’ve ever watched. Instead of relying on the old-school mentality of just wrapping the foot, falling back, and hoping for pain compliance, Danaher breaks down entirely new mechanics that turn this into a devastating, inescapable joint break. It completely redefines the submission. Highly recommended.

Magic Guard Passing by Travis Stevens
As someone who is lucky enough to be a Student of Travis and experience his teaching every week at class this is the next best thing and with how busy Travis is finding time for a private lesson that accommodates both schedules is near impossible. This is the closest thing to having him at my house when ever I want to sharpen my skill with passing someone’s guard. Understanding the concepts they way Travis explains them can benefit a day one beginner or someone who has been training for years.

Fast Track BJJ: Jiu-Jitsu for Old Guys Pressure Passing System by Bernardo Faria
Super helpful. Instructions are clear and the techniques are all related to a small number of positions with a clear goal and a clear connection to Faria's bottom game. I strongly prefer this to a huge catalogue of ways to pass the guard, and I think it's slightly better than the "Fast Track" half guard instructional. Hope BJJ Fanatics will do more of these. Personally, I'd like a little more conceptual stuff at the beginning about the role of pressure and how to achieve it without wasting energy. Faria is famous for this. Wanted to hear more wisdom on that.
direct, helpful, good value
Fast Track BJJ: Jiu Jitsu for Old Guys - Half Guard System by Bernardo Faria
For me, this was definitely worth the purchase. The instructions are clear and efficient. There number of techniques is plentiful but they are all variations on a core theme, so it's not overwhelming. I prefer this style of instructional to one that provides a massive catalogue of techniques that I'll neither learn nor use. My only complaint is that the conceptual and strategic overview at the beginning is very minimal. Still, this is nice b/c of the tight focus on just two positions and the key techniques that work best from those positions. Plus, it's less expensive. I hope Fanatics will put out more of these. Personally, I'd vote for even fewer specific techniques/variations and a bit more on the conceptual and strategic side of things.
