Pin Escapes & Turtle Escapes: BJJ Fundamentals - Go Further Faster by John Danaher
I found Pin Escapes & Turtle Escapes: BJJ Fundamentals – Go Further Faster by John Danaher to be one of the most detailed and structured BJJ instructionals I’ve used. The concepts are explained clearly, and the emphasis on fundamentals, framing, bridging, and positional survival really helped improve my confidence in bad positions. It’s especially valuable for beginners and intermediate practitioners who want a systematic understanding of escapes rather than just memorizing techniques. The instructional is definitely long and very detail-heavy, but the depth of explanation makes the techniques easier to apply during live rolling. The turtle escape section was particularly useful, and I noticed immediate improvements in my defensive awareness and ability to recover guard. Overall, it’s an excellent resource for building strong defensive fundamentals in BJJ.

Practical Jiu Jitsu 1: From Punches And Tackles to Drunk Uncles and Handguns by Michael Heinz
After years of combat sports I have no problem admitting that dealing with a spazzy, atheletic newbie can be harder than sparring someone higher level than myself. Years in a sport ingraine patterns and expectations that are no longer applicable to self-defense and can harm you (for example, giving up top position for submission). This course was a refresher on what habits I do and do not want to keep outside the mat.
